Calling all U11 Girls - Team selection & dedicated trophies at GP5

The Kent U11 Girls’ Team has two upcoming tournaments in Spring 2017.

In order to select twelve players and reserves for this team, the KJCA GP5 at Dulwich College on Sunday 12th February will serve as a selection tournament.

In addition to the normal GP prizes, there will be dedicated trophies for the best-performing girls in the U9 and U11 sections.

All girls who live or go to school in Kent are therefore invited to play at GP5 and seek selection for the Kent U11 Girls’ Team.

Please enter as normal in either the U9 or U11 section through the KJCA website at: http://www.kjca.org/event/150

Hopefully, on 12 February 2017, we will have a large turnout of keen girls eager to play chess and to represent their county in the forthcoming national competitions.

NOTICE of MEETING

Kent Junior Chess Association (KJCA)

Annual General Meeting

Sunday, 19th February 2017 at 12 noon
At: Sevenoaks Primary School, Bradbourne Park Road, Sevenoaks, Kent

KJCA is pleased to welcome all to its Annual General Meeting which will be held on the Sunday 19th February 2017, during training day 4 at Sevenoaks Primary School.

The KJCA provides first class regular competitions and training days across Kent which are the envy of all other counties throughout the UK. It also has a long and proud history of success at its county team events, winning many national titles across all junior age groups.

The KJCA is run through the dedication of a few parents just like you. We not only need to hear your voice in order to update and improve our services, but we also need more volunteers to help run the organisation and to help continue the KJCA success for many more years to come.

If you are able to give some of your time, even if it is just for a few hours at the various KJCA events, please let us know. You do not necessarily need to know anything about chess.

Come along to the AGM to find out more.  All welcome.

Well done to everyone who played, from experienced county players to those at their first chess tournament. We hope you all enjoyed both some great chess games and spending time with your friends. We look forward to welcome you to more of our tournaments and training days throughout the season.

At this tournament, we trialled the introduction of different sections for the older children –  an U18 Minor and an U18 Major with a grade qualifier.  From the initial feedback, this seems to have been a positive move and worked well to allow all those in these sections to enjoy some good games of chess. Please do get in touch if you have any further feedback on this change. The plan is to continue with these new sections going forward, however we need to be certain that our young chess players are happy and that the changes work smoothly with the KJCA website and the GP tables.

Extra thanks to Anand Verma and Tarun Nayak who have worked hard to make these changes  compatible with the KJCA website, prepare tournament director and re-load the new crosstabs onto the website.

To see the full crosstabs from the tournament go to: http://www.kjca.org/result/149

Success for Freddie Hand at the 4NCL Congress

Congratulations to Freddie Hand who achieved his best tournament result to date at the 4NCL Congress at Newport Pagnell over the weekend of 5-6  November 2016.

Freddie finished in a four-way tie for first place in the Open section of the 4NCL.

This is a fantastic result for Freddie who, at 14, has worked hard to developed his chess game and compete at such a high national level.  The Open section included many top-level chess players in the country with several titled players competing.

Freddie was unbeaten and scored four points out of five in this very strong field, finishing with a FIDE performance rating for the event of 2585.  Four of his games were against International Masters’ (IM’s)  rated well over 2400.

Except for the last match, when a game of almost two hours felt like a quick draw, each game lasted around four hours with some exciting finishes including one of Freddie’s opponents letting his time run out as he searched for the best move in the endgame.  Overall all the games were interesting and swung both ways at times.

Freddie is one of the top junior chess players in the country, and the experience gained from competing so well with adult players of this level will be invaluable for the future of his promising chess career.

All at KJCA are proud of his considerable achievements and wish him continued success.

Institute of Chess Coaching Days 2016-17 - Coaching Day Two this Sunday 6th Nov at Sevenoaks Primary

Just a quick reminder that Coaching Day two is this Sunday, 6th November, at Sevenoaks Primary School.

We hope everyone is ready for learning lots of chess techniques and having some fun.

If you would like to know more about the Institute of chess coaching that we offer, please look at the details below or go directly to our training page and the FAQ's that have been answered by our chief coach, GM Chris Ward:  http://www.kjca.org/site/page?view=training

There is still time if you would like to register for this Sunday or our future training days this season.

Please go to: http://www.kjca.org/event/143  or contact us on webmaster@kjca.org to confirm that you would like to come along.

________________________________________________

Welcome to or welcome back to(!) the chess coaching days at the KJCA that I can tell you are the envy all the other counties around the country and are clearly a contributing factor to our national success. To start, please be sure to carefully read the training FAQs that you will find under the ‘training’ tab at the top of this page.

The date for this season are as follows:

Day 1: Sunday 2nd October 2016 - Sevenoaks Primary School
Bradbourne Park Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 3LB

Day 2: Sunday 6th November 2016 - Sevenoaks Primary School
Bradbourne Park Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 3LB

Day 3: Sunday 8th January 2017 - Barming Primary School
Belmont Close, Barming, Maidstone, Kent, ME16 9DY

Day 4: Sunday 19th February 2017 - Sevenoaks Primary School
Bradbourne Park Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 3LB

IMPORTANT is that when enrolling your child (via the ‘events’ page), you ensure that you are registering for the correct sessions. For the 4 day courses (Levels 3-5) your fee will cover you for all of those days (plus the exam at the end) and we recommend you attend preferably all, but at least 3 of the 4 in order to maximise your understanding and give yourself the best chance to get a good result.

Provided you (i.e. your son or daughter) achieved a merit or distinction at the previous level you sat, we are happy for you to move up and hence register for the next level. If you obtained a ‘pass’ at any level, then clearly there are good things that have been taken on board but we recommend that you re-take that course to help you get to grips with all of the topics involved. Moving up ‘too soon’ only leads to further problems down the line and it really isn’t fun when too much material is going over a child’s head. Please note it is not a race to see who can get through all the exams as quickly as possible and rather all about discovering and understanding different aspects of the game that can be applied when they sit down and play their matches.

We really want our coaching days to be fun but by the same token we don’t want anyone spending a day listening to things that they already totally understand. Specifically, with regards to levels 1 and 2 and new arrivals to the coaching days, boys and girls will be assessed on the first morning of attendance to check they are in an appropriate group. When registering you will see that as levels 1 and 2 are only two day courses (with exams sat at the end of CD2 and CD4), you have a choice of permutations to attend. If your child is a beginner but you feel may be a quick learner and were hoping to join level 3 next season, then for example level 1 in CDs 1 and 2 with the intention of doing level 2 in CDs 3 and 4 makes sense.

Young children will have adult assistance when taking tests and although there will be an alternative exam date or two laid on for those unable to attend CD4, whatever the level there is absolutely no compulsion to take an exam should a child feel unprepared or anxious.

If I could just kindly ask that you don’t leave it too late to enrol as that makes my life easier when obtaining the other coaches. That aside hope to see you all soon!

Grandmaster Chris Ward

Congratulations to Shreyas - Youngest Fide Candidate Master in the country

Congratulations to Kent Junior, Shreyas Royal, who has been awarded the prestigious title of Fide Candidate Master (CM).

At the tender age of six, Shreyas is the youngest CM in the country.

He achieved the title after his fantastic performance at the European Schools' Chess Championships, held in Greece  in June 2016.  Shreyas came second in the U7 section with 7/9 points, winning a silver medal.

Shreyas started playing in the Kent tournaments and has already been successful at both national and international competitions. He is one of the youngest promising chess players in the country and all at KJCA are proud of his achievements.

Kent Penguins at the Junior 4NCL

The first J4NCL weekend of the season was held at 1-2 October 2016 at Wokefield Park near Reading.  The J4NCL is a team event, with five rounds of standard play chess over the weekend.

This time, a very young team of players from Kent joined together to play as the 'Kent Penguins', consisting of Ciaran Brightley-Davies, Shlok Verma, Stakhey Sedykh and Arthur Chikovsky. Given the choice between Divisions 1 and 2, the boys insisted on playing  in the stronger Division 1.

The Penguins knew that it would be a challenging competition with average rating difference with opponents in some cases being as high as 40 points. Nevertheless, the team proved to be resilient under pressure, had great battles and managed to finish ninth with 4 match points which is just one match point lower than the middle of the table.

The boys had a really enjoyable competition and gained some invaluable experience of playing against stronger and more experienced opposition. They are already keen to come back to the second J4NCL weekend to compete head-to-head with some of the best junior teams in Britain.

Mikhail Sedykh - Kent Penguins team manager

Richard Haddrell RIP

Richard Haddrell, a long serving member of the KJCA committee and a dedicated ambassador of chess in Kent and across the country, sadly passed away on 30 September 2016.

Richard was actively involved with chess over many years at club (Tunbridge Wells), county (Kent), junior (KJCA), southern chess union (SCCU) and national levels.  He was also involved with the English Chess Federations (ECF) and held important roles such as national grading administrator, controller of the national schools’ championship and as a member of the governance committee.  He received the ECF President’s award for Services to Chess in 1994: his appointment as an Honorary Life Vice President was on the agenda for the forthcoming AGM.

Richard was a keen chess player and dedicated his life to chess both in Kent and nationally. His early support in setting up junior chess in Kent and organising tournaments led to what is now the KJCA.  Richard was a very kind hearted and funny man, he will be missed by everyone who got to know his through KJCA and other local chess clubs.  We are all thankful for all his work and support.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and those who knew him well.

Richard’s funeral will be held at Tunbridge Wells crematorium in the afternoon of Thursday 3rd November, followed by a wake at the Spa Hotel, Tunbridge Wells.
